The 43,200-SF office/classroom
facility opened on the campus of Cumberland University
in January 2003, doubling the college's classroom space.
The project was the result of a restoration-renovation
of the "Old Gymnasium," which had fallen into
disrepair and was a campus eyesore. For years there
had been talk of demolition or renovation, but lack
of funding only added to the indecision. A gift of $4
million by 1985 CU graduate Edward Labry made the project
possible.
The design goal was to maintain the integrity of the
historic building and to highlight its character. Matching
brick was located and a new facade created, integrating
the new with the old. The new addition connected to
the renovated structure via an open, airy two-level
atrium.
Today, Labry Hall is the focal point of the campus,
enjoyed and utilized by students, faculty and community
alike. The facility contains two tiered lecture halls,
a career center, classrooms, computer labs, office space,
conference areas, break rooms, teachers' lounge,
and informal study areas, as well as housing the College
of Business dean's suite and the campus information
technology offices and equipment.
Finishes consist of a slate tile in the foyer and atrium,
a warm color palette, earth-tone carpets and expansive
windows, maximizing natural light and views to the wooded
campus beyond.
