The opening of the new Pickett County Library has been eagerly awaited by the community and its citizens for many reasons. The original library was housed in a small space in the Community Center, outgrowing its space for years. Several computers and a large screen television, acquired through grants, were unable to be properly utilized. The community and local businesses, as well as the County government, had no facility that could house the various activities needed for a growing community, and the County Archives lay in boxes in a non-air conditioned space.
Today, the new library occupies a site at the corner of Main Street and Pickett Annex Square, adjacent to the Federal Post Office. It is ADA-accessible, has ample site lighting and parking, an exterior book drop, and sports its own Community Room with kitchen, ready for after-hours use. The spacious 350-SF Anna Ruth Moles Reference and Genealogy room is named after Pickett County’s beloved librarian, who served since its first day. Adjacent to this room is the County Archives Storage Room. Other areas include an expansive stack and reading area, with separate areas for children, adults, and periodicals; a computer technology area and director’s work room.
Stamps Design Group has been working with the Friends Group since 1999 on this project. Once funding was obtained, the library was built in two phases: (1) site work and the erection of a metal building structure, (2) application of brick veneer and exterior accents and completion of the interior build out. The color scheme of the library consists of soft greens and beiges. |
